The Lyra has four different modes for different recording situations: front, front & back, tight stereo and wide stereo. I have not tested all of them. I used "front mode" to record my one-man podcast. I was able to sit over a foot away. The clarity and detail were much better than my SM58, and the balance was better than my Fathead ribbon mic. I also tested front & back mode, which is designed for recording a conversation between two people. I plugged the Lyra directly into my iPad Air and was able record my wife and I chatting about the day while sitting across from one another. The quality was much better than expected!
Overall, I am very proud to have the AKG Lyra as a non-sponsor of the Telescope Podcast! It's affordable, sounds fantastic and has a modest price tag of around $150. Check out an AKG Lyra here.
